Residents of Santa Cruz del Retamar, Toledo, voice their demands for a suitable school: "This isn't about luxury, it's about essentiality"
In the heart of Spain, a group of residents from the small town of Santa Cruz del Retamar, home to approximately 4,000 inhabitants, recently traveled to Toledo to voice their concerns and demand action. The focus of their protest was the 'Nuestra Señora de la Paz' public school, which has over 90 years of history but currently presents serious problems of security, accessibility, and space.
The school's makeshift classrooms, shameful bathrooms outside the premises, and physical education classes on the street are just a few of the conditions that the mayor, Ángel Martín, described during the protest. He also denounced the administrative hurdles, including a supposed hydrological study of a non-existent stream.
The minister responsible for education in the Castilla-La Mancha region, Amador Pastor, has acknowledged the need for a hydrological study due to a stream running through the chosen land for the new school. However, he stated in the Castilla-La Mancha Regional Assembly last week that he has not contacted the town hall or received a response from them.
The minister affirmed that he asked for the town hall's response regarding the situation of the students at 'Nuestra Señora de la Paz' on June 13 and a few days ago, but the town hall did not respond. This lack of response led the protesters to ask where President Page was during their demonstration at the Palacio de Fuensalida, the regional government's headquarters.
The entire town, regardless of ideology, is united in their demand for a new school. For the past four years, more than 60 fifth and sixth grade primary school students have been receiving classes at the town hall's Casa de la Cultura. The protesters used slogans like "it's not a whim, it's a necessity" to emphasize the urgency of their demand.
The Junta is not responsible for the hydrological study, and Amador Pastor invited the PP town hall to push for the required documentation. The mayor of Santa Cruz del Retamar, Ángel Martín, aims to make their demand visible and won't stop until a new school is built. The protest on the first day of school, where over a hundred people demanded a new school, was just the beginning of their fight for a better education for their children.
