Restructuring of Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht Party Finalized in MV
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), a political party launched at the beginning of 2024, has been actively establishing its presence in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The party, which narrowly missed entering parliament at the early federal election in February 2025, has now set up district associations in all six districts and the two independent cities of Rostock and Schwerin.
This significant step towards entering the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was marked by the founding of the BSW's state association last December. The party's most recent milestone was the announcement of the founding of its eighth and final district association in Waren on the Müritz.
As the party gears up for the future, it has planned to nominate its candidates for the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at a state party conference at the beginning of 2026. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance will also hold its federal party conference in December 2025, during which the new name of the party will be decided. However, it is speculated that Sahra Wagenknecht herself may continue as the party's chairperson, should the party decide to change its name.
The BSW currently boasts around 180 members in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is led by figures such as Friedrich Straetmanns, a former Left Party politician and interim retired state secretary in the Schwerin Ministry of Justice, who serves as the state chairman of the BSW, and Melanie Dango from the district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, who is one of the state chairpersons of the BSW.
The party's efforts in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reflect its commitment to expanding its influence and seeking entry into the state parliament. The abbreviation BSW will remain the same for the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, ensuring continuity in the party's identity as it embarks on this new phase of its political journey.
