Retired at 37 - Basketball star Jeremy Lin, former New York Knicks champion, receives an outpouring of tributes
Jeremy Lin Announces Retirement After 15-Year NBA Career
After a 15-year career in the NBA, Jeremy Lin, a nine-year veteran, has announced his retirement at the age of 37. Lin shared the news in an Instagram post on Saturday.
Lin's career began with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, but it was with the New York Knicks where he truly made his mark. During the 2011-12 season, Lin's iconic 11-game stretch, known as 'Linsanity', catapulted him to stardom. He averaged an impressive 23.9 points and 9.2 assists while leading the Knicks to a 9-2 record.
This remarkable run helped the Knicks achieve a 9-3 record and secured Lin's place as a fan favourite in New York. Lin's form during 'Linsanity' earned him sixth place in voting for the NBA Most Improved Player Award.
However, after 'Linsanity', Lin was waived by both Golden State and the Houston Rockets before joining the Knicks again in December 2011. His time in Houston failed to build on his success in New York.
In the years that followed, Lin played for a number of teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, and the Lakeland Magic (G League affiliate of the Orlando Magic). He won an NBA Championship ring with the Toronto Raptors during his final year in the NBA.
Despite the ups and downs of his career, Lin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete against the world's best athletes and to challenge stereotypes. He wrote in his Instagram post that saying goodbye to basketball was the hardest decision he's ever made.
Lin shared that he lived out his wildest childhood dreams by playing basketball in front of fans all around the world. He felt fully alive every time he touched a basketball. Lin expressed his appreciation for the support he received throughout his career and thanked his fans for their unwavering support.
As Lin hangs up his basketball shoes, he leaves behind a legacy of determination, resilience, and inspiring moments on the court. His retirement marks the end of an era in the NBA, but his impact will be felt for years to come.
