Returned from Iraq: Estonian Defense Forces Celebrated Upon Homecoming Following Estcoy-22 Mission

Estonia's infantry company, Estcoy-22, concluded its service in the United States-led coalition military operation, Inherent Resolve, on Monday, September 1. The company, primarily based on the A mechanized infantry, had been serving in Iraq since the spring of 2023.

The Scout Battalion's unit service in the operation ended on the same day, with Estcoy-22 lowering the Scout Battalion flag at the Erbil airbase in Iraq. U.S. Brigadier General Kevin J. Lambert, the coalition forces commander in Iraq, highlighted Estonia's significant contributions to the mission.

During their time in Iraq, Estcoy-22 was responsible for providing close protection, fulfilling rapid response tasks, and securing the Erbil base when necessary. Their duties were instrumental in supporting the U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve, which aims to help Iraqi local security forces build up their defense capabilities to independently defeat Islamist extremist groups.

Brigadier General Lambert thanked Estonia and its people for their efforts, noting that Estonia's contributions are remarkable given its size. Major Voolaid, the commander of Estcoy-22, stated that the operation provided a unique experience, strengthened alliances, and demonstrated Estcoy-22 as a professional partner.

The operation also offered an opportunity for soldiers to adapt to different cultural environments and learn to cooperate effectively. Nearly 500 Estonian soldiers have served in the mission to date.

Estoncoy-22's commander during the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve was Captain Marko Taar. The company returned to Estonia on Tuesday morning, marking the end of their deployment in Iraq.

Estonia, not only a vocal, confident, and reliable NATO partner in Europe, is also able to contribute to security and export its security capabilities by supporting efforts like the coalition to defeat ISIS. The conclusion of Estcoy-22's mission in Iraq is a testament to Estonia's commitment to maintaining international peace and security.
