Revealed: Five Countries Predicted to Be the Safest Worldwide in 2025
In the recently released 2025 Global Peace Index, several countries have shown remarkable consistency in maintaining peace and stability. Here's a look at the top ten countries and some key factors contributing to their peacefulness.
Iceland, a consistent frontrunner, has held the top spot in the Global Peace Index since 2008. The Nordic nation's low crime rate, high levels of public trust, and muted militarization have been instrumental in its world-beating safety and security. Despite an increase in military expenditure, Iceland managed to increase its overall peacefulness score by two percent in 2025.
New Zealand, another consistent top performer, placed third in the 2025 index, improving from fourth place in 2024. The improvement was due to a drop in civil unrest and a reduction in terrorism-related impacts.
Ireland, maintaining its position from 2024, secured the second place in the 2025 index. The emerald isle avoided international conflict throughout the year, contributing significantly to its high ranking. Ireland's neutrality and reduced militarization are key factors in its peacefulness.
Switzerland, despite being in fifth place in the 2025 index, is the only one from the top five not to have been in the top ten every year since 2008.
Finland, known to have entered the top ten for the first time only recently, is an interesting addition to the list. Unlike Iceland and New Zealand, Finland was not a consistent top performer every year since 2008, making it stand out as a 2025 top ten country not found in the top ten every year since 2008.
Singapore, a "blue zone" nation, is the only non-European country in the top ten apart from New Zealand, taking sixth place.
Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia, and Finland complete the top ten in the 2025 Global Peace Index.
Unfortunately, the 2025 Global Peace Index also highlights a record decline in global peacefulness. A record 78 countries are involved in conflicts beyond their borders, and 87 countries overall recorded a deterioration in peacefulness. Azerbaijan saw the largest improvement in its peace score, moving up 17 places in the ranking. However, Bangladesh suffered the biggest deterioration, moving down 33 places.
It's clear that while some countries are making strides towards peace, global conflicts continue to escalate. The importance of maintaining peace and stability, both domestically and internationally, cannot be overstated.
