Toyota Unveils Hydrogen Engine in Corolla Sport: A Step Towards Sustainable Racing

In an exciting development, Toyota has announced that it will be installing a hydrogen engine in the Corolla Sport, also known as the Corolla Hatchback, marking a significant step towards sustainable motorsport. The announcement was made by Akio and GAZOO Racing Company President Koji Sato on April 22.

The hydrogen engine, which is currently undergoing endurance testing, has been generating quite a buzz. Racing driver Hiroaki Ishiura, who has had the opportunity to test the engine, described it as feeling like a normal engine. The unique vibrating sound of the engine, while different from an electric motor drive, bears a striking resemblance to the familiar "vroom" sound of a gasoline engine.

Toyota Times, in a teaser, allowed listeners to catch a glimpse of the hydrogen engine's sound. However, no specific information about the sound was provided in the video. Akio directed that the hydrogen engine be used in a race as early as late 2020.

The testing of the hydrogen engine is taking place one month before a 24-hour race, scheduled from May 21 to 23. Toyota is testing the hydrogen-powered engine, which is manufactured by Toyota itself, in this race to assess its performance under extreme conditions.

The engineers are working tirelessly to ensure the hydrogen engine performs as expected. Achieving a regular engine sound without emissions is not normal, making the similarity of the hydrogen engine's sound reassuring.

Toyota Times was given a special opportunity to visit the circuit where the Corolla Sport is being tested. They intend to discover more about the hydrogen-powered engine and its potential impact on the future of motorsport.

As the world moves towards sustainable energy solutions, Toyota's hydrogen engine in the Corolla Sport is a promising step towards a greener future for racing. The hydrogen engine tested by Toyota in this 24-hour racing event is the same hydrogen combustion engine developed by Toyota, used in the Corolla H2 Concept and the GR LH2 prototype.

Stay tuned for more updates on Toyota's hydrogen engine in the Corolla Sport as the 24-hour race approaches.
