Review of Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds 2nd Generation: Setting a new standard for noise-canceling technology
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen, set to release in early September, have been making waves in the world of audio technology. These earbuds, designed with a combination of the bulbous shape of the Sony WF-1000XM5 and the stem form of the AirPods Pro 2, offer a unique blend of style and functionality.
The sound quality of the Bose QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen is generally difficult to fault. With weighty, defined lows, lush, forthright and subtle mids, and prominent highs that strike a 'just right' balance between being smooth and sharp, these earbuds are natural-born entertainers on the sound performance front.
The Immersive Audio technology in the QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen comes in two flavors: 'Still' and 'Motion'. This feature, one of the best implementations of spatial audio I've come across, second only to Apple's, offers an immersive audio experience that enhances the overall listening experience.
The Bose QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen are among the most secure-fitting earbuds I've tested that aren't specifically designed for sport. Three sizes of both silicone eartips and 'stability bands' are supplied to help cater to a wide range of ear canal and concha sizes, ensuring a comfortable fit for all users.
In terms of controls, a single tap on either stem plays/pauses playback or answers a call, while a sliding motion up or down adjusts the volume. The buds' automatic adjustments in noise-canceling levels have been made smoother to prevent music disruption from sudden loud noise.
The noise-canceling ability of the QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen sets the benchmark. Voices come through with clarity and substance in calls, and on the other end, the user is told that they sound clear, even in windy conditions. The earbuds feature Bose's AI-powered noise suppression system, improving call quality significantly.
However, the Bose QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen's otherwise rock-solid armour is marred by their battery life. The earbuds offer decent battery life, with Bose claiming six hours in the earbuds with ANC on, but the Immersive Audio mode drops that to a mere four hours. The absence of wireless charging, a feature that was present in the originals, is also a bummer.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the Bose QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen are currently available for pre-order and are poised to deliver an exceptional audio experience to its users. With their combination of style, sound quality, and innovative technology, these earbuds are sure to be a hit among audiophiles and casual listeners alike.
