Revised driver's license regulations undergo governance transformation: minister

The Minister of Transportation and Communications, Chen Shih-kai, has announced a series of reforms to the driver's license regulations in Taiwan. The proposed changes aim to improve traffic management and ensure the safety of all road users.

The reform will not solely focus on elderly drivers but will encompass the entire driver's license system, from the initial test to the renewal process and professional driving training.

For senior drivers, the changes will include mandatory medical and cognitive function tests, traffic safety courses before license renewal, and on-road training courses for those who have violated traffic regulations.

The ministry also plans to make exams more difficult, aiming to raise awareness of driving risks and promote safe driving practices.

To encourage senior drivers to voluntarily hand over their licenses, the ministry plans to offer TPASS subsidies. However, the exact details of these subsidies have not yet been specified.

Chen Shih-kai acknowledged the challenges in achieving public satisfaction with overall traffic management in Taiwan. The ministry plans to hold a news conference in the middle of this month to explain the details of the proposed changes in depth.

The proposals for these changes will be submitted by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Transportation Bureau. The ministry's ultimate goal is to assist seniors in driving safely and improve traffic management in Taiwan.

The reforms are expected to take effect later this month. The ministry encourages all drivers to stay informed and prepare for the changes.
