Rice output anticipated to surge to 1.2 million metric tons by 2030
In a significant move to bolster Russia's rice production, a meeting was held at the Federal Scientific Center for Rice in Kuban. The meeting, led by Fedot Dereka, the regional Minister of Agriculture, focused on increasing rice production and readiness for harvesting.
Currently, the rice harvest in Kuban stands at 862,000 tons from an area of 117,400 hectares. However, with plans to expand the sowing areas for rice cultivation, this figure is set to increase significantly. The planned sowing area for rice cultivation by 2030 is 140,000 hectares.
This expansion is aimed at increasing the rice production by approximately 438,000 tons. To achieve this, farmers in the region have decided to expand their sowing areas. The goal is to increase the total volume of Russian rice production annually, with Kuban contributing significantly to the gross harvest in the next five years, potentially reaching 1.1-1.2 million tons.
Kuban currently contributes around 70% of the total volume of Russian rice production annually. Over 40 varieties of rice are grown in the region, and the current yield per hectare is not specified, but the goal is to increase it to 80% per hectare.
Mikhail Timofeev, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Krasnodar Krai, has set this goal. The discussion in Kuban also touched upon the readiness for harvesting of rice. The meeting was a crucial step towards ensuring the success of the planned expansion and increased production.
The Federal Scientific Center for Rice, located in Kuban, provided a suitable setting for the meeting, offering a wealth of knowledge and resources to facilitate the discussions. The center is renowned for its contributions to the development of rice cultivation in the region.
With the expansion of sowing areas and the aim to increase yield, Kuban is poised to play a vital role in Russia's rice production in the coming years. The success of this endeavour will not only benefit the region but also contribute to the country's agricultural sector as a whole.
