Rising Anti-Semitism Warned by Israeli Consul

One year ago, on September 5, 2024, an attack on the Israeli Consulate General in Munich and the nearby NS Documentation Centre shook the city. The 18-year-old Austrian perpetrator, whose identity remains undisclosed, used a bolt-action rifle from former Swiss Army stocks in the attack.

The attack was followed by a 12-minute shootout with police, resulting in the perpetrator's death. Consul General Talya Lador-Fresher expresses her gratitude towards the police and many German politicians who clearly condemned the attack.

In the aftermath of the attack, Lador-Fresher emphasised the need to confront the issue of anti-Semitism. She finds it problematic that people fail to distinguish between the State of Israel and the Jewish community. Lador-Fresher believes that the hatred of terrorists is not only against Israel, but also against Germans and Europeans living peacefully in the West.

Anti-Semitism, according to Consul General Lador-Fresher, is coming from the right, the left, and the radical Islamic side. However, she did not discuss the issue of anti-Semitism coming from these specific groups in detail.

Lador-Fresher did not express a wish for more backbone in dealing with anti-Semitism in the immediate aftermath of the attack. She did, however, urge society to confront the issue more actively.

After internal investigations, some security measures were tightened retroactively at the consulate. Lador-Fresher mentions that the consulate already had strict security measures in place before the attack, which contributed to the swift and efficient handling of the attack attempt.

Despite the attack, Lador-Fresher considers fostering and deepening relations between Israel and Germany as a crucial mission. She states that a terrorist attack cannot deter them from this mission, but instead strengthens their resolve to carry it out.

Regarding the attacker, Lador-Fresher did not provide any new information. Similarly, no new information was given about the nearby NS Documentation Centre or the warnings of growing anti-Semitism.

Lador-Fresher's call to action against anti-Semitism remains relevant today, as she continues to work towards strengthening the relationship between Israel and Germany.
