Rival teams exhibit significantly stronger emotions compared to Nagelsmann's assessment
In a candid post-match interview for ARD, German coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed his disappointment with his team's performance during the World Cup qualifiers, following a 0:2 defeat in Slovakia.
The 38-year-old coach, who remains firm in his goal of becoming world champions in the summer in America, acknowledged that Germany's chances of winning a game are not as certain as they were in the past. He suggested that the team should focus less on quality and more on players who give their all.
Nagelsmann lamented that the team lacked footballing quality during the match, and he made critical remarks about the team's performance. He stated that the opposition was more emotionally engaged throughout the game.
Despite the setback, Nagelsmann reiterated his goal for the team to qualify for the World Cup. To achieve this, the team needs to win all five remaining games, including against Slovakia.
The German team, which includes three newcomers: goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, defender Nnamdi Collins, and forward Paul Nebel, as well as four players who returned to the squad, will face stiff competition from Northern Ireland and Luxembourg in the World Cup qualifiers.
Nagelsmann selected the best players from Germany for the match, but the team's poor start in the qualifiers has put their World Cup participation at risk. If they fail to qualify, they will play in the playoffs in March.
However, Nagelsmann remains optimistic. Anything less than winning the World Cup, he stated, would be "a fatal sign, both internally and externally." He acknowledged that he is not currently standing out but is determined to lead the team to success in the upcoming games.
