River Vily officially unveiled in Suntar village locale
River Ice Drift Advances Across Siberia
The rivers of Siberia are experiencing an early and active ice drift season, with several rivers opening up earlier than usual.
In the Tatinsky district of the Amga River, the river opened three days earlier than normal on May 10. This early opening is also being observed on the Vilui River in the village of Suntar and the river Vilui in the city of Nюrba, both opening on May 10 as well.
On the Yanа River, water levels are rising rapidly in the Verkhoyansky district, with ice jams and water on the ice being reported. Similar conditions are being seen on the Amga River, where ice drift is taking place in the Amginsky, Churapchinsky, and Tatinsky districts. In the central districts, the daily water level rise on the Lena River is 0.3-0.4 m, with ice jams occurring.
The active phase of ice drift on the Lena River is still taking place in the Lensky district, covering a distance of 75 km. Over the past day, the ice drift on the Vilui River advanced a significant 143 km, with the active phase currently taking place in the Mirninsky and Suntarsky districts, covering a distance of 174 km.
On the Aldan River, two sections of ice drift merged into one main drift on May 10, covering a distance of 970 km. The lower edge of the ice drift on the Nюя River has reached the mouth.
On the Kolyma River, the daily water level rise in the Zyryanka village of the Verkhnekolymsky district is 12 cm, with water on the ice. Water levels in the Tatinsky district of the Amga River are 4.4 m below normal.
The authorities responsible for coordinating the active ice drift on the Vilui River are typically the regional administration of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in Russia, including local emergency services and the river transport authorities. Ice movements are expected in the village of Verkhnevilyuisk in the next 24 hours, and the river is expected to open in the cities of Olekminsk in the next 48 hours, with the river opening in the cities of Nюрба and Viluisk expected on May 11-13.
This active ice drift season is a natural occurrence, but it can have significant impacts on local communities and infrastructure. It is important for authorities to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of those living and working in the affected areas.
