Rivian unveils updated software, introducing autonomous driving capabilities and additional features
Rivian Unveils Advanced Driver Assistance System
Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced the launch of its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The new technology, developed in-house, promises to revolutionize driving experiences with its high-resolution cameras, advanced sensors, and innovative features.
At the heart of the ADAS is a sensor suite that includes 11 cameras and five radars. This combination allows the system to provide a comprehensive view of the vehicle's surroundings, enhancing visibility even in poor conditions such as fog, darkness, or glare.
One of the key features of the ADAS is Enhanced Highway Assist. This system enables drivers to take their hands off the wheel while driving, providing a hands-off, eyes-off experience. The new feature is part of the launch and is currently available on 135,000 miles (217,000km) of highways across Canada and the U.S.
Rivian claims its cameras have the highest resolution of any North American vehicle, ensuring clear and detailed images for the ADAS. The onboard compute module can handle over 200 trillion operations per second, processing this data quickly and efficiently.
The ADAS also includes the "Go Chime" alert, notifying drivers when the vehicle ahead has started moving. Additionally, the latest software update brings convenience enhancements such as tilt-down side mirrors when reversing, remote charge port door closure, and the "Go Chime" alert.
Rivian's ADAS is not limited to highways. The development roadmap includes further advancements, with expansions planned over the next year for off-highway roads. The company has also introduced Rally Mode, designed for performance dual-motor vehicles, improving throttle response and steering on challenging surfaces like dirt and ice.
For those seeking an even more powerful driving experience, the new Performance Upgrade is available as an OTA software update for C$7,200 (US$5,000). This upgrade boosts performance to 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque, unlocking three new driving modes: Sport, Rally, and Soft Sand.
In Germany, the A9, A3, and A8 highways are planned to be equipped with Rivian's Enhanced Highway Assist in the coming months, expanding the system's reach across the globe. The hands-free driving system is currently available for second-generation R1S and R1T vehicles.
Looking towards the future, Rivian expects to debut hands-off, eyes-off capabilities in controlled conditions in 2026, further pushing the boundaries of what is possible with electric vehicle technology.
