Rob Boston expresses passion for poker once more: "I'm smitten with the game"

Laidback Poker Pro and Former Reality TV Star, Boston Rob, Hits the Irish Poker Open

Known as much for his reality TV appearances as his poker skills, the rough-and-tumble Boston Rob is diving headfirst into the Irish Poker Open (IPO). This event isn't just about the cards for him—it's about the off-table activities, the camaraderie, and the adventure.

Boston Rob's card sharking journey started as a kid, playing five-card stud with pennies in his grandad's basement. From those humble origins, he honed his skills, graduating to college home games and landmark poker rooms like those at Foxwood. His first recorded cash came in 2006 at the Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker Tournament, San Jose.

But it's his stints on US reality TV shows that have put Boston Rob in the public eye. He's been a survivor contestant five times, once as a mentor, and appeared on The Amazing Race and the US version of the popular UK show, Traitors.

There's a lot of crossover between the game of poker and outwitting opponents in reality TV, according to Boston Rob. To succeed in either, one needs adaptability, self-awareness, and the ability to prioritize. "[In poker and in competition reality shows,] being able to accurately assess your situation is crucial, much like knowing where you stand in a hand or within your tribe," Rob explains.

The appeal of the Irish Poker Open for Boston Rob isn't just the poker; it's the opportunity to play poker at night and go play golf during the day, watch live music, or do extra activities beyond just sitting at the table the whole day. This versatility is what drew him to the IPO.

Social connections, the lure of travel, and the thrill of the game are key factors when selecting which tournaments to attend. "I love the social aspect of poker—hanging out with people from around the world," says Rob. "For me, that's the biggest win."

Boston Rob's approach to poker has always been balanced, taking breaks from the game when he wants to focus on other projects. But it looks like the tide is turning, with Rob saying he's recently fallen back in love with poker. Will we see more of Boston Rob at live events this year? It sure seems so! "I have a relationship with the game where, when I'm really loving it, I play a lot. I love the game."

The Irish Poker Open is underway in Dublin and is sponsored by PokerStars and Paddy Power. The €1,150 Main Event, which now boasts a €2.5 million guarantee, is already underway. This year's edition of the IPO is shaping up to be one of the standout live events, breaking attendance records and impressing players.

Notably, six PokerStars Ambassadors, along with handpicked teammates, are taking part in the Shamrock Showdown—a competition blending poker tournament action with creative off-the-felt games. Each team includes a player who won their way to the Irish Open via an Emerald Pass. For those following the action on the PokerStars blog, there's even a chance to win a share of $2,000 in Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) tickets.

If any PokerStars pros are looking for mentoring advice during the Shamrock Showdown, it seems Boston Rob is open to helping! The IPO continues through until April 21, 2025.
