Robotaxis Operated by Tesla Extend Service Region in Austin in Anticipation of Public Debut
Tesla Expands Austin Robotaxi Service, Aims for Nationwide Presence
Tesla is making significant strides in its autonomous mobility ambitions, with plans to outpace competitors and prepare for a wider Robotaxi expansion across the United States. The electric vehicle company has recently secured a rideshare license in Texas, allowing it to operate its Robotaxi fleet under the state's new autonomous rideshare laws.
The latest development comes as Tesla lays the groundwork for its driverless service to open to the general public in Austin next month. Since the launch of its Robotaxi program in the city, Tesla has multiplied the coverage area nearly tenfold, expanding the service area to approximately 173 square miles. This marks the third geofence expansion in Austin since the program's inception.
The new geofence is over 90% larger than Waymo's in Austin, covering 173 square miles compared to Waymo's 88 square miles. Tesla has also increased the number of vehicles in its Austin Robotaxi fleet by 50%.
Beyond Austin, Tesla is considering expanding its Robotaxi service to additional U.S. cities, possibly including Chicago. Recent job postings suggest that Chicago could be one of the next markets where Tesla will roll out its Robotaxi service.
Tesla's aggressive push into autonomous mobility is highlighted by its rapid geofence growth in Austin. The company initially launched its Robotaxi service in an 18-square-mile area, but the latest update reflects that the Austin geofence now covers 173 square miles, not 171 as previously reported.
In addition to the geofence updates, Tesla is also interested in Robotaxi expansion in the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Texas, and plans preparations for New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. The company aims to make its Robotaxi service available to about half of the U.S. population by the end of 2025.
This regulatory approval in Texas is a significant step forward for Tesla's autonomous mobility aspirations. As the company continues to grow and expand its services, it is poised to become a major player in the autonomous rideshare market.
