Rosehips Make a Comeback: Reintroduced and Ready for Harvest

In the heart of the Netherlands, Frans Verhoeven's Verhoeven Bloemen has turned rosehip cultivation into a thriving niche. Frans, a horticulturist with a keen eye for floristry, began his journey with rosehips in the early 1980s, inspired by cultivated rosehip branches that caught his attention.

Frans' assortment primarily consists of the Rosehip Prinsberry Red and Prinsberry Orange varieties. These rosehips, unlike traditional varieties, do not ripen at exactly the same time, allowing for a staggered production that benefits both Frans and the floral industry.

The rosehip season, which runs from late August to October, sees Frans' rosehips holding their colour and structure well, making them suitable for both fresh arrangements and dried floral work. The average stem length of Frans' rosehips ranges between 30 and 70 centimeters, providing versatility in floral design.

To cater to the floristry needs, Frans intentionally grows rosehip varieties, sizes, and shapes that are ideal for bouquet work. The berries on Rosehip Prinsberry Red and Prinsberry Orange are small and tightly packed, adding a unique texture to bouquets.

Verhoeven Bloemen operates fully outdoors, and like any outdoor farm, it is affected by weather conditions. However, Frans has implemented sustainable practices to mitigate these effects. Drip irrigation is used for efficient water use, ensuring a sustainable setup.

Frans' rosehip cultivation has garnered attention, leading to collaborations with breeder Kolster to start marketing his home-grown rosehip varieties. Frans Verhoeven's rosehips are now marketed exclusively by Adomex, with the brand selling them under its name at auctions.

Frans encourages floral designers to experiment with rosehips, praising their versatility and longevity. His passion for rosehips, coupled with his innovative cultivation methods, has undeniably made a mark in the floristry world.
