Run-time individuals carrying the Olympic Flame: For whom do they exert themselves? (1) Yuki Jyojima: "If I can accomplish something for those in need, that is sufficient"

In a remarkable twist of events, Yuki Jyojima, a career-track engineer at Toyota, has embarked on a new mission outside of his workplace. Once driven by his admiration for "monozukuri" (manufacturing), Jyojima is now using his skills to create electric prosthetics.

Jyojima's journey began when he decided to work on a project to gain hands-on manufacturing experience. This led him to create a prosthetic hand for a man he met at a non-profit organisation (NPO) gathering. The man, who had lost four fingers in an accident, was in need of a prosthetic hand. It took about one year for Jyojima to complete the hand.

Jyojima expressed his gratitude to his family for their support during this project. He also sought advice from a start-up company he had pulled designs from, hoping to find a way to meet people who would use his prosthetic hands. His efforts paid off when the man wears the prosthetic hand in his daily life and has filmed videos of himself using it to grab various things.

One video that particularly pleased Jyojima showed the man playing cards with his daughter while wearing the prosthetic hand. Another heartwarming moment came when the man was able to hold a pen and write with it, a task he had not been able to do since his accident.

Inspired by these successes, Jyojima plans to release a manual for the type of prosthesis he has created. His goal is to establish a scheme to help expand prosthetic hand manufacturing activities. He also plans to create an English version of the manual to respond to requests for help from overseas.

Jyojima's work on the prosthetic hand project has not affected his role in powertrain development at Toyota. His responsibilities involve requesting suppliers to develop parts based on Toyota's design, checking these parts, and ensuring they function properly when installed in the vehicle.

In addition to his work, Jyojima sees being a torchbearer in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay as a unique opportunity to spread the word about his projects and the importance of "monozukuri". He believes that this platform will allow him to inspire others and encourage them to pursue their passions, just as he did when he embarked on his journey to create a prosthetic hand.
