Russia labels its adversaries
Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that some Western companies are keen to return to Russia, but are waiting for all restrictions to be lifted. The Kremlin representative discussed the prospects for the return of these companies at the Eastern Economic Forum - 2025, but the specific timeline for lifting these restrictions remains unclear.
According to Putin, many European companies left the Russian market for political reasons. However, the Kremlin's stance towards these companies that left Russia for political reasons remains uncertain. It is also unknown if any negotiations have taken place between the Russian government and these companies regarding their return.
The Russian government has not provided any details on the specific companies that are waiting to return to the market. Dmitri Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President, stated that foreign companies sponsoring armed formations in Ukraine are now considered enemies of Russia. He added that those who acted dishonestly will have to pay dearly to return to the Russian market.
Peskov also mentioned companies like ExxonMobil as adversaries of Russia, as they are engaged in discussions about a return to projects like the Sachalin project, provided there is green light in the context of a peace process for Ukraine. The timing of any potential return of these companies to the Russian market remains to be seen.
The statement by Putin suggests that political tensions between Russia and these companies may have played a role in their departure from the market. Moscow, however, will engage in a respectful dialogue with brands that fulfilled all obligations upon leaving its market, according to Peskov. The uncertainties surrounding the return of these companies to the Russian market continue to persist, as it is uncertain if they will face any penalties or additional requirements upon their return.
