Russia and China have taken a significant step forward in their diplomatic and economic relations, with the announcement of a visa exemption for Russian tourists. The exemption, effective from September 15, 2021, until September 14, 2026, was announced during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and a high-ranking Chinese official in the Russian city of Vladivostok.

The meeting, which also took place in the Chinese capital, marks a strengthening of ties between the two nations, particularly in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022. The sanctions targeted at Russia by Western countries have undoubtedly had an impact on its diplomatic and economic relations, making China's support even more significant.

The visa exemption applies to Russian citizens travelling for business, tourism, visiting relatives or friends, exchanges, or transit up to 30 days. This move is expected to boost the flow of Chinese tourists to Russia, potentially increasing by 25%. Currently, there are about 150 flights per week between Russian and Chinese cities.

Russia's main export of oil and gas is now primarily sold to China, which buys these energy goods at a discount. This trade relationship has been a cornerstone in the strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

The announcement was made by the news agency TASS, and was later confirmed by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Guo Jiakun. Putin also announced that Russia will respond to China's actions in a friendly manner, indicating a positive and collaborative approach between the two nations.

However, it's important to note that the search results do not provide the name of the Chinese official who was present at the meeting in Vladivostok. Despite this, the visa exemption for Russian tourists is a significant step in the ongoing strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between Russia and China.
