Russian attacks on Ukraine's power sector prompt vow for retaliation from Ukrainian authorities
In the strategically important port city of Chornomorsk, just outside Odesa, a civilian bulk carrier flying the flag of Belize sustained minor damage. The sources of the information about the damage spoke on condition of anonymity.
The exact cause of the damage is not yet clear, but it is believed that the ship hit an unknown explosive device. This incident occurred amidst a series of attacks that have been intensifying in recent weeks, targeting critical infrastructure in the Odesa region.
The attacks left nearly 60,000 customers without electricity in Ukraine, with 29,000 of them in the Odesa region alone. One person was reportedly injured in the attacks, and there were damages to homes and administrative buildings in Chornomorsk. Critical infrastructure in the region is currently operating on generators due to the attacks.
Russia has been targeting Ukraine's energy and transport systems, and the recent attacks in the Odesa region are not an exception. In a significant escalation, Ukrainian units announced on August 31 their intention to conduct deep strikes into Russia. These strikes resulted in the destruction of over 40 combat and strategic nuclear-capable bombers, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers, as well as Beriev A-50 early warning aircraft, in what was described as one of the most severe Ukrainian drone attacks deep inside Russian territory.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed to retaliate after Russian drone attacks on power facilities in Ukraine. He met with Ukraine's top general, Oleksandr Syrsky, to discuss further actions. However, President Zelenskyy did not give further details about the planned new deep strikes.
It is important to note that Ukraine has been attacking Russian oil refineries and pipelines, and these recent attacks in the Odesa region may be part of a larger strategy. The attacks occurred in the northern and southern parts of Ukraine, indicating a widespread and coordinated effort.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial to stay informed and to support those affected by these attacks. The damage to the bulk carrier is a reminder of the ongoing conflict and the need for peace and stability in the region.
