Russian envoy Chaika discusses matters with leaders of Ingush and North Ossetia following border disagreement

In a move aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the North Caucasus region, the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District, Yuri Chaika, held a meeting with the Heads of Ingushetia and North Ossetia, Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov and Sergei Menyailo, respectively. The meeting was called in response to a mass brawl that occurred on August 24 in the village of Chermen, a sensitive area in relations between North Ossetia and Ingushetia due to past armed conflicts and ongoing territorial disputes.

During the meeting, Chaika emphasised the priority of stability in the region and the importance of the 'unity of the multi-ethnic Russian people'. He also underlined the need for consolidation of society and unity of the North Caucasus regions in the face of external pressure. To this end, he gave Kalimatov and Menyailo 'a number of specific instructions aimed at consolidating the efforts of all levels of government and society to strengthen civic unity'.

Following the incident, Menyailo blamed 'hotheads' from both republics for the escalation. He suggested that law enforcement should block entry to the region in the event of interethnic clashes. Chaika, on the other hand, pointed to a possible trigger for the conflict being a domestic dispute, according to Telegram channels close to law enforcement.

The official statement emphasised the importance of cooperation between the executive authorities and law enforcement agencies. It also highlighted the need for 'harmonisation of interethnic and interfaith relations' and the development of cultural ties. Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov reposted Chaika's statement on his Telegram channel without comments.

Details of the practical steps expected to follow the meeting were not specified. However, it was reported that North Ossetian security forces announced the detention of several participants in the conflict. Chaika reiterated the importance of Ingush and North Ossetian residents in the context of the 'special military operation' in Ukraine.

There was no information about the officials' talks on Menyailo's social media accounts or in North Ossetian media outlets. The participants discussed issues of interethnic and interfaith relations, the development of cultural ties, and measures to ensure public safety.

Following the meeting, Chaika instructed Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov and Sergei Menyailo to strengthen law enforcement measures and enhance cooperation to ensure regional stability. The Prigorodny district, where the incident occurred, remains a sensitive area in relations between North Ossetia and Ingushetia, and this meeting marks a crucial step towards maintaining peace and stability in the region.
