Russian offensive escalates, resulting in a lawmaker's death in Lviv, as devastating attacks sweep across Ukraine.
In a series of devastating attacks, Russian forces launched a massive overnight assault on central and southeastern Ukraine, targeting both military and civilian areas. The attacks, which occurred primarily through the use of drones and missiles, resulted in at least one death and 26 injuries, including two children.
The Ukrainian air force reported impressive success in fending off the attack, managing to down 510 out of 537 drones and 38 out of 45 missiles launched by Russia. However, the attacks still caused significant destruction, with private homes, facilities, and even cafes, service stations, and industrial enterprises being damaged in multiple cities.
The attack in Ukraine's city of Zaporizhzhia was one of the most heavily affected, as reported by the Ukrainian state emergency service on Telegram. Explosions were also heard in Dnipro and Pavlograd in the Dnipropetrovsk region, a region that had been largely spared from intense fighting since February 2022.
The exact individual or group coordinating these attacks is not specified in the available sources, but they are believed to have involved Russian forces. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as well as the horrific murder of Andriy Parubiy, a well-known Ukrainian politician and key figure in the 2014 Maidan revolution, who was shot dead in the western city of Lviv. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine is seeking a shooter for the intentional homicide of Andriy Parubiy.
In response to these attacks, Zelensky stated that Moscow is using the preparation time for a meeting of leaders of both countries to launch new attacks on Ukraine. He also emphasised the need for tough measures against those bankrolling the Russian army and effective sanctions against Moscow to reopen a window of opportunity for diplomacy.
Sergiy Lysak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, warned residents to take cover, while Kyiv acknowledged on Tuesday that Russian troops had entered the region. It is important to note that Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five Ukrainian regions that Moscow has publicly claimed as Russian territory (Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea).
As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritise the safety and well-being of civilians and to work towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
