Russian President Vladimir Putin extends congratulations to North Korea as they prepare to celebrate their founding anniversary, according to the North Korean state news agency, KCNA.

In a significant display of solidarity, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Beijing on Wednesday, marking the 77th anniversary of North Korea's national founding on Sept. 9, 1948.

The summit, held on the sidelines of a Chinese military parade, was an opportunity for the leaders to discuss bilateral ties and strengthen their relationship. Putin expressed his confidence in further solidifying the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea.

In a congratulatory message sent the previous day, Putin praised North Korea's deployment of soldiers to fight for Russia in its war against Ukraine. He considered this as a "clear symbol" of North Korea-Russia friendship and mutual defense. Kim, in turn, referred to the deployment as a "brotherly duty."

The trilateral solidarity between Kim, Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping was evident during the military parade, where the three leaders appeared together on the center stage. This meeting comes after Putin invited Kim Jong-un to meet in Beijing on September 3, 2025, before Kim's planned visit to Russia.

Relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have honorably overcome the test of time, according to the KCNA. This is a testament to the long-standing friendship between the two nations, a friendship that was strengthened further with the first official recognition of North Korea by Russia on Oct. 12, 1948, when the Soviet Union was still in existence.

During the summit, Putin reminded Kim of this historical connection, emphasizing Russia's role as the first country to recognize North Korea as a state. He also stated that this approach aligns with the interest of the peoples of both countries and contributes to the security on the Korean Peninsula and across Northeast Asia.

As the meeting concluded, Putin reportedly invited Kim to visit Russia again, a gesture that underscores the continued efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. The exact details of the visit remain to be announced.
