Russian President Vladimir Putin to Visit China for Four-Day Trip

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to embark on a rare four-day trip to China, commencing on the 31st of August and concluding on the 3rd of September. The visit includes a series of high-profile events and meetings, as confirmed by three Russian sources.

During his stay in China, Putin will attend a regional security summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin. This gathering brings together leaders from several Asian nations, aiming to promote regional stability and cooperation.

One of the most anticipated events of Putin's visit is the military parade scheduled for the 3rd of September in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The parade, marking the end of the Second World War following Japan's formal surrender, will see Putin as Xi Jinping's "main guest." Putin is expected to be seated beside the Chinese President, to Xi's right, while North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is set to be seated on Xi's left.

The presence of Kim Jong-Un at the military parade suggests a possible bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping during Putin's visit. However, specific details about such a meeting are still under discussion.

In addition to the military parade, Putin will hold bilateral meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan.

Trade between Russia and China, which had previously reached record levels, has recently begun to decline. Putin aims to reverse this trend during his visit, with three agreements involving Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas company, scheduled to be signed in China. The details of these agreements, however, were not disclosed by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.

Putin's delegation includes Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, Ushakov, and the heads of Russia's largest banks and companies.

This extended visit abroad by Putin underscores the importance of the Russia-China relationship and the potential for future cooperation between the two nations.
