Russia's Foreign Minister declares that discussing security guarantees while disregarding Moscow's stance on the matter will lead to nothing in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, diplomatic efforts are multiplying to find a solution. The latest development comes amidst reports of territorial gains by Russian forces in the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian troops have taken control of the villages of Sukhokaze, Pankivka, and Novogeorgiyevka. This capture may complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts, as it marks a continuation of Russian territorial gains against less numerous and less well-equipped Ukrainian forces.
The military chiefs of staff of NATO countries are discussing the conflict in Ukraine and the progress of diplomatic efforts by videoconference. This discussion follows an AFP report confirming the development, and sources close to the discussions at Radio France have also learned of the proposal.
As the situation escalates, NATO allies are considering what kind of security guarantees to propose to Ukraine in case of a peace agreement with Moscow. Donald Trump, in a recent statement, is open to providing aerial military support as a security guarantee to Ukraine, but not ground troops. European allies may be tasked with providing ground troops if aerial support is agreed upon.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin has proposed Moscow as a possible meeting place with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, Zelensky has described Moscow as a complicated choice, with Switzerland or Austria being potential venues for the planned summit. Budapest has also been considered, but was rejected by Zelensky.
The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, warned that discussions on Western security guarantees for Ukraine without considering Moscow's position would be futile. He also deemed the attempts by European leaders to influence Donald Trump in favor of Ukraine as clumsy. Lavrov accused Europeans of leading to an aggressive escalation of the situation without proposing constructive ideas.
Amidst these developments, Putin has shown a potential shift in his approach to the conflict, proposing a meeting with Zelensky after previously refusing the idea. However, the expected meeting place for the summit remains uncertain, with diplomatic efforts continuing to find a neutral European country for the crucial talks.
