Sanam Luang in Bangkok undergoing extensive restoration for upcoming end-of-year festivities
The Phra Nakhon district in the heart of Bangkok is undergoing a significant renovation, with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) taking the lead. The renovation is necessary due to the deterioration of the lawn and parking areas caused by prolonged use.
The BMA's Department of Public Works will oversee the renovation work, which is scheduled to take place from August 25 to November 15, 2025. During this period, the parking area will be closed from September 16 to November 13, and the lawn will be off-limits throughout.
District Director Kosol Singhanat is overseeing the project. He stated, "The renovation is crucial to restore the lawn and parking areas of Sanam Luang, ensuring they can continue to serve the public for years to come."
During the renovation, areas will be set aside for government, private sector, and public use. The city administration is considering provisions for general public use, such as exercise and recreational activities.
The BMA is also reviewing plans to allocate space for major year-end activities, including National Father's Day and New Year celebrations. However, due to the renovation, the opening ceremony of the 2025 SEA Games will primarily be held at the larger Rajamangala National Stadium for security and convenience reasons. Sanam Luang will serve only as a sub-venue and the site for the Games' cauldron event.
Once plans are finalised, updates will be communicated through official BMA and Phra Nakhon district office channels. The city administration encourages the public to stay informed and to plan accordingly during the renovation period.
This renovation is part of the BMA's commitment to maintaining the beauty and functionality of Bangkok's public spaces, ensuring they continue to serve the city's residents and visitors for years to come.
