In a recent development, Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH has issued a recall for a batch of their 500-gram Zwiebelmettwurst due to the presence of harmful E. coli bacteria. The affected product, identified by batch number 133 and a best before date of 27.08.2025, is a brand partner of the food retailer Edeka.

The recall comes after the discovery of verotoxin-producing E. coli bacteria (VTEC), which can cause severe illnesses such as watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, E. coli bacteria can also lead to bloody diarrhea. A complication of E. coli infection, particularly in children, is hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure, requiring temporary dialysis, and potentially be fatal.

Customers are advised to refrain from consuming the product and to return it to the store for a refund. The recall was reported by lebensmittelwarnung.de. The product was available for sale in several federal states including Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Berlin, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH has also issued a statement advising persons who have already consumed the product and develop symptoms to seek medical help immediately and indicate a possible EHEC infection.

This is not the first time that food safety concerns have arisen. Recently, Rewe also had to remove a cheese from the market due to acute health hazards. A household appliance manufacturer also recently had to issue a recall for several models.

It's worth noting that E. coli bacteria are found in the gut of livestock and can produce toxins. A study has shown the effects of trans fats on the body, further emphasising the importance of food safety and the need for regular recalls when necessary.

As always, it's crucial to prioritise health and safety, and to be vigilant when purchasing and consuming food products. The content from Outbrain cannot be loaded due to privacy settings, but we encourage readers to stay informed and cautious.
