School Commencement in NRW: Police Provide Guidelines for Secure Schools
As the new school year begins in Dortmund and Lünen, the Dortmund Police are focusing on ensuring the safety of students during their commute to school. With an increased risk of traffic accidents near bus stops and congested areas around schools, the police are taking proactive measures to protect young road users.
The safety of young road users is a top priority for the Dortmund Police. They recognise the potential dangers posed by traffic accidents, particularly those involving children suddenly stepping out from between buses. To mitigate this risk, the police are encouraging drivers to exercise extra caution around bus stops and school zones.
To educate children about road traffic dangers and safe behaviour, the Dortmund Police have introduced the Traffic Puppet Theater in Westfalenpark. This interactive theatre provides kindergarten groups and primary school classes with a playful and emotional learning experience about traffic safety. The theatre is part of the police's broader efforts to promote traffic safety among children.
Adults, especially parents, play a crucial role in traffic education. Children often imitate the behaviour of those around them, making it essential for adults to set a good example. Proper behaviour and adherence to rules by adults can help instill safety in children.
The Dortmund Police also recommend that children wear bright, reflective clothing or bags for improved visibility during school commutes. Additionally, bicycles should be in good working order, and helmets are strongly advised for school commuters who choose to cycle.
Parents are also encouraged to avoid using their cars for the "drop-off and pick-up" traffic, as this often creates hazardous situations, especially at primary schools. Congestion, parking, and maneuvering increase the risk for children walking or cycling around schools.
In 2023, there were six school-related traffic accidents in Dortmund and Lünen, and in 2024, there were five such accidents. These statistics underscore the importance of traffic safety measures and the need for continued vigilance.
