School enrollments are on the rise.
School has resumed in the city of Krefeld, welcoming back students after the summer break. However, the city is facing several challenges, particularly in the area of school digitization and the need for expansion.
City Director Markus Schöhn has expressed concerns about the digitization process, stating that delays are often caused by issues with suppliers. This lack of digital infrastructure is a significant concern, with 37 locations in the federal funding program experiencing delays.
In an effort to address this issue, the city is investing €4 million during the summer vacation to renovate 31 municipal educational institutions. However, the completion dates for the digitization expansion remain uncertain.
Another challenge facing Krefeld schools is the need for expansion, particularly in the kitchens and dining halls. Around €3.5 million is required to expand these facilities at 17 schools by the year 2028.
The city is also working to increase the number of full-day education places for first-graders, as there is an estimated 80 percent quota needed to meet demand. From next year, there will be a legal obligation to offer full-day education for first-graders.
Despite these challenges, there are also positive developments. The new school year has seen an increase in the number of students, with approximately 34,900 students now enrolled, compared to around 400 fewer last year.
One of the new school buildings is the House of Education in Krefeld-Mitte, which unites kindergarten, elementary school, and family center under one roof. Another new addition is the satellite location of Uerdingen Comprehensive School on Lübecker Weg.
To prepare parents for the enrollment process, the city is holding information events in each district in November. The city also invites parents of children who will be enrolled in two years to learn ways to prepare their children for school at these events.
City Director Schöhn continues to appeal for more financial support from the federal and state governments to address the challenges facing Krefeld schools. The digitization of schools and the expansion of facilities are critical for the future of education in the city.
In a positive note, it is worth mentioning that, in Bavaria, over 99 percent of addresses already have fast internet due to state support complementing federal efforts, with 1,457 municipalities involved in the funding process and ongoing expansion especially targeting under-served "grey areas". This serves as a model for Krefeld and other cities facing similar challenges.
The teachers in Krefeld schools are also facing challenges, with first-graders often lacking basic skills such as language skills and concentration. These skills are referred to as prerequisites and are essential for successful learning. The city is working to address these issues and ensure that all students have the best possible start to their educational journey.
