School term improvements will persist in Les Varendes

After an extensive planning process, Les Varendes High School is set to open its doors today, welcoming Year 7 students and those joining from the now-shuttered La Mare de Carteret High School. The school's Education President, Deputy Paul Montague, visited the premises this week and noted an increased presence of tradespeople, working tirelessly to complete the incomplete refurbishment works from the summer break.

Deputy Montague, who was once a teacher at Les Varendes High School, expressed confidence that the school is ready to welcome its new students. He stated that any outstanding elements won't impede the learning of students. However, he admitted that improvements are ongoing and have overrun from the six-week school holidays.

Meanwhile, Deputy Tina Bury has questioned the progress of the school's readiness for the new term. Despite these concerns, Deputy Montague remains optimistic, assuring the community that the school will provide a successful transition for students and staff.

In a unique turn of events, the voluntary renovation of La Mare de Carteret High School for post-16 students involved local community groups, former students, and educational charities collaborating to improve facilities. Over the past six weeks, volunteers have worked hard to transform the school, with some classrooms now boasting vibrant murals, thanks to the work of artists.

The States reached out to the community for volunteers to help refurbish La Mare de Carteret, and the response was overwhelming. The school will now accommodate students from both Les Varendes and La Mare de Carteret this year, marking a new chapter in the history of both institutions.

As Les Varendes High School embarks on this new journey, the focus remains on providing a high-quality education for all students. The school's leadership is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all involved, and they look forward to a successful year ahead.
