Schröder's Last Competition in the "Warrior" Race?
In the lead-up to the upcoming European Championship, the German basketball team is facing a challenging season, with a squad struggling with injuries, ailments, and illnesses. Amidst this, one key figure is set to play a crucial role: Daniel Theis.
Theis, a 33-year-old veteran, has a history of injuries but remains indispensable for the team due to his defensive abilities, according to former national player Per Günther. Theis' defensive prowess, combined with his partnership with Dennis Schröder over the past ten years, has made them one of the best duos in German basketball.
However, Theis' preparation for the tournament has been far from ideal. He made a rusty appearance in the Supercup semi-final against Turkey, following a series of missed games during the preparation. Theis played for the German national team at the 2021 European Championship but missed two games against Slovenia and one against Serbia due to knee problems. His winter was spent playing for AS Monaco in the NBA, but his time there was cut short due to the same knee issues.
Despite these setbacks, Theis is determined to make his last big hurrah in the national team this summer. His age and injury history have led to speculation that he may not return to the NBA, making this potential swansong all the more significant.
If Theis is not fit, the team's medal chances will drop significantly. Under the basket, the situation is critical this summer due to the absence of Moritz Wagner and Isaiah Hartenstein. However, the next generation, led by NBA youngsters Ariel Hukporti and Orlando pro Tristan da Silva, is ready to take over.
Schröder, who has known Theis since he was 15, has expressed his desire to play with Theis in the NBA. Despite the geographical scope of the praise, Schröder questioned whether it should apply beyond Germany, suggesting that Theis' skills are worthy of recognition on a global stage.
As the European Championship approaches, the German team will be relying on Theis' experience and defensive skills to help them navigate the challenges ahead. Whether this will be his final hurrah remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Daniel Theis will be a key figure in the team's bid for success.
