Secret cameras allegedly installed in the restrooms of the Scottish parliament have been denied by MSP.

Scottish politician Colin Smyth, a member of the Scottish Labour Party and an MSP (Member of the Scottish Parliament), is facing serious allegations. On August 5, 2025, Smyth was arrested and charged with two offences: possession of indecent images and allegedly placing a secret camera in toilets within the Scottish Parliament.

The allegation has come as an utter shock to Smyth, who strongly refutes it. He stated, "I am fully cooperating with the investigation into these allegations."

Following his arrest, the police conducted a sweep of the Scottish Parliament building, but no covert recording devices were found. Police Scotland has instructed enhanced security checks for the building going forward.

Smyth's home address was also made public by the police, a decision he described as "devastating." This led to Smyth moving away to protect his family. His pass for Holyrood was deactivated on Thursday.

In response to the serious allegations, Scottish Labour took swift action. Smyth was suspended from the party due to the possession of indecent images offence. Despite the suspension, Smyth remains an independent MSP on the Scottish parliament website.

The 52-year-old man is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court at a later date. Meanwhile, further details regarding the hotel asylum seekers' case are not provided in this article.

This news marks a significant turn in the political career of Colin Smyth, a figure typically associated with centre-left, social democratic policies promoting workers' rights and public services. The outcome of the ongoing investigation and court proceedings will undoubtedly shape his future in Scottish politics.
