Semiannual report detailing the progression of vehicular collisions
In the first half of 2025, the state of Baden-Württemberg witnessed a slight decrease in the total number of traffic accidents, with 150,957 incidents, a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous year. However, the number of traffic fatalities saw a concerning increase of 17.5%, reaching 188.
The rise in fatalities can be attributed to several factors, with more than a third (35.7%) of these incidents occurring due to excessive or inappropriate speed. Notably, the number of fatalities involving e-bike riders more than doubled to 22 compared to the previous year (nine fatalities). Four people were killed in accidents involving e-scooters, compared to two in the same period the previous year.
Interior Minister Thomas Strobl has emphasised zero tolerance for those who endanger traffic safety by driving under the influence of drugs. The police reported on a mid-year traffic accident development report for Baden-Württemberg, which revealed an increase of 29.7% in drug-related traffic accidents, with 432 incidents. A total of 5,763 drug-related traffic offenses were reported by the police in the first half of 2025, a 15.8% increase from the previous year. During the Europe-wide coordinated ROADPOL control week for alcohol and drugs in traffic, the police detected 402 alcohol-related offenses and 346 drug-related offenses.
Young people aged 14 to 24 were particularly affected, making up nearly a third of the seriously injured (30.6%) and over half of the lightly injured (47.6%) and killed (50.0%) in accidents involving e-scooters. Since 2020, the Baden-Württemberg state government has not specifically implemented group-specific prevention measures targeted at adolescents who regularly use e-scooters to guide them towards responsible use.
On a positive note, the number of people seriously injured decreased by 3.8% to 2,699, and the number of people slightly injured increased by 3.7% to 17,329. The number of accidents involving drunk drivers decreased by 9.4% to 1,810 in the first half of 2025.
The Baden-Württemberg state government is taking action to address these issues, with initiatives such as the traffic safety campaign, GIVE CARE ON THE ROAD. The report is available for download as a PDF, and the contact details for the Ministry of the Interior, for Digitalization and Communities include a press office and a citizen representative. The press office and citizen representative can be contacted via email or a contact form on their respective websites.
The increase in traffic fatalities, particularly those involving e-bikes and e-scooters, underscores the need for continued efforts to promote traffic safety and responsible use of vehicles. The government's initiatives, along with increased public awareness and personal responsibility, are crucial in ensuring the safety of all road users in Baden-Württemberg.
