In the world of online gambling, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has been busy dealing with a series of issues.

Recently, platforms offering Pocket Games Soft titles to players in Indonesia, a country where all forms of gambling are strictly banned, have come under scrutiny. The MGA has clarified that any reference to the authority and/or gaming licence by these sites is false and misleading.

The MGA has also had to issue public denials of false licensing claims on multiple occasions in 2025. One such incident involved Malaysia-based operator God55, which falsely claimed MGA approval during a promotional campaign. God55 had no valid licence with the MGA, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), or the Curacao Gaming Authority (CGA). This operator was even involved in a connection profit campaign with Birmingham City Football Club, where false MGA authorization was claimed.

Earlier this year, online casino casinowinner.io was found to have false and misleading references to MGA regulation.

Despite these challenges, the MGA has been working diligently to enforce its rules. In 2024, it issued 17 new licences and handed out 25 fines. The authority also worked closely with the Malta Financial Services Authority to strengthen regulatory oversight.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, the gambling landscape is also evolving. In New Zealand, sports groups are pushing back against a new gambling bill. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is planning to hike membership fees from 1 October.

In Asia Pacific, there is news about a pushback from sports groups against a New Zealand gambling bill. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is planning to hike membership fees from 1 October.

On a positive note, responsible gambling practices are being promoted in South Africa by the Limpopo Gambling Board.

Looking ahead, the gaming industry will gather in Rome from 03-06 November 2025 for SiGMA Central Europe, an event expected to attract 30,000 industry leaders.

The MGA's 2024 report shows that it continues to face challenges in enforcing rules against unlicensed operators, especially in countries where gambling is illegal. These incidents demonstrate how unauthorized operators attempt to leverage MGA licensing to build credibility and attract consumers in restricted markets. The MGA urges consumers to be vigilant and only engage with licensed operators to ensure necessary consumer safeguards are in place.
