St. Joseph Girls Volleyball Team Thrives Under New Coach Amid Challenging Circumstances

The St. Joseph girls volleyball team is making a strong comeback this season, thanks in part to the appointment of Michael Costales as their new head coach. Costales, who played four years at St. Joseph and coached the boys program in the past, has stepped up to lead the team through a difficult period.

The team has faced adversity, with the resignation of their previous coach and a roster of only seven players before the 2025 BIIF season began. However, the girls have rallied together, describing themselves as a family and their bond growing stronger due to the challenging circumstances.

The seniors of the team, including Michaela Costales, Jaselle Kamaka-Mauhili, Miya Rubio, and Hilina'i Faumuina, are determined to leave a lasting legacy for the younger players. They aim to show that even when the odds are stacked against you, things can still work out.

Costales' coaching staff includes Yvette Moran, Jay Rowe, and Kieran-Taiye Long. The team has also been fortunate to secure scrimmages with other BIIF Division-II schools, arranged by Costales in his role as athletic director, to give the girls the senior campaign they deserved.

The team's scrimmage schedule includes games against Laupahoehoe, Ka'u, Connections, Pahoa, Christian Liberty Academy, and Laupahoehoe. They recently won their home match against Connections last Wednesday in straight sets, a testament to their hard work and determination.

The team's success, as defined by Costales, is to remain a cohesive team with heart and perseverance, and to have fun at the scrimmage level. They have already made lasting memories, such as coming back from a 13-2 deficit in a scrimmage against Christian Liberty Academy to win in five sets.

The team consists of a small number of players, with two new freshmen, Makayla Salmo and Aubrey Sieb, also being part of the team. Goretti Allen, a junior, is another valuable member of the squad.

The St. Joseph girls volleyball team is a shining example of resilience and teamwork, and they are eager to continue their journey towards success. Their bond as a family, coupled with Costales' coaching, is sure to guide them through any challenges that come their way.
