September 2025 Highlights: Top Cinematic Events to Look Forward To

Get ready for a cinematic extravaganza as several film festivals are set to light up the screens this September. Here's a roundup of some of the most anticipated events:

filmPOLSKA 2022

Celebrating its 20th edition, filmPOLSKA continues to be one of Berlin's best festivals for spotlighting regional cinema. This year, the competition programme is focusing on debut or second feature films. Some of the highly anticipated works include the coming-of-age story Glorious Summer by Helena Ganjalyan and Bartosz Szpak, and Letters from Wolf Street by Arjun Talwar, an essay film that portrays the comings and goings of a single street in Warsaw. The Panorama programme will focus on the best of contemporary Polish cinema, and the event will also feature a concert focusing on Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz, as well as works by Frederic Chopin and Karol Szymanowski.

Fantasy Filmfest 2023

First launched in 1987, Fantasy Filmfest has a reputation for launching cult classics. This year, the festival is set to feature a variety of genres, including contemporary erotic thrillers, neo-folk horror, and gangster epics. One of the highlights of Fantasy Filmfest 2023 is the contemporary erotic thriller, Bone Lake, and Ben Leonberg's new work, Good Boy. The Toxic Avenger, a black comedy splatter film, will also be shown.

Festival of Animation

Returning for its 8th edition, the Festival of Animation boasts a selection of 131 animated works from 33 countries. The event takes place at silent green, Gerichtstr. 35, Wedding, and City Kino Wedding, Muellerstr. 74, Wedding, from September 26-28.

Film Without Borders

Taking place at Eibenhof Bad Saarow, Alte Eichen 33, Brandenburg, from September 11-14, Film Without Borders is a four-day indie film fest featuring films, workshops, intimate talks with filmmakers, and optional skinny dipping.

Queer Film Festival

Screening some of the year's boldest, funniest, and most beautiful queer cinema, the Queer Film Festival promises an exciting lineup of films that celebrate diversity and inclusivity.

Idiocinecratic

Idiocinecratic is a brand-new screening series run by Eli Lewy, focusing on the overlooked, the rarely seen, and the outright forgotten films. The filmmakers featured in the series are yet to be announced.

Hump! Film Festival

Serving up 22 spicy adult short films, queer, body-inclusive, and 100% kink-positive, Hump! Film Festival is a unique and exciting event not to be missed.

Kurdish Film Festival

A week-long programme spotlighting Kurdish filmmakers from Kurdistan and the diaspora, the Kurdish Film Festival is a must-attend event for those interested in exploring the rich and diverse world of Kurdish cinema.
