In a tragic turn of events, a bus accident in Afghanistan's western province of Herat has claimed the lives of 78 people, including 17 children. The collision occurred near the Iranian border, where the bus was reportedly making its way to the capital Kabul.

According to reports, the passengers on the bus were Afghan nationals who had been deported from Iran to Afghanistan in the past six months. This mass deportation is part of a larger trend, with the Iranian government having reportedly deported 1.2 million Afghan refugees in the past six months.

The Taliban's information department reported this to be one of the deadliest accidents in recent years in Afghanistan. It is important to note that the Taliban is the current ruling authority in the province of Herat.

The bus accident comes at a time when Afghanistan is grappling with a significant refugee crisis. At the beginning of the year, there were six million Afghan refugees in Iran. However, Pakistan is also contributing to the crisis by deporting many Afghans back to their homeland.

Dozens of Afghans from German resettlement programs for at-risk Afghans are among those being deported from Pakistan. The interior minister of Afghanistan, Eskandar Momeni, announced that another 800,000 people would have to leave Iran by March next year.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenging circumstances faced by many Afghan refugees. The international community is urged to provide support and assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of these vulnerable individuals.
