Severe Rain Warnings in Gujarat: India Meteorological Department Issues Red Alert for Kutch and Northern Regions of Gujarat
Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Continue Across Gujarat
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms to persist across Gujarat over the next seven days, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated places in the Kutch region on September 9. This weather system has caused significant disruptions across the state.
In response to the severe weather, all educational institutions in Banaskantha district have been closed on September 9. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are on standby, and control room helplines have been established for emergency assistance.
The heavy rainfall has led to flooding conditions, causing the cancellation of ten state transport bus routes. The weather system is expected to weaken gradually, providing relief by mid-September.
Unfortunately, the heavy rains have taken a toll on Gujarat's agricultural sector. Approximately 50,000 hectares of crops have been damaged statewide, with cotton, paddy, soybean, and horticultural crops suffering the most impact. The Central and South Gujarat regions, as well as Chhotaudepur district, have been particularly hard hit, with crops on 20,000 hectares damaged in Chhotaudepur district alone.
The weather system has also caused damage to infrastructure, with 69 electricity poles and 257 feeders being damaged in Kutch, disrupting power supply to 38 villages. The IMD has issued a protection warning for the districts of Kutch, Banaskantha, and Patan until September 10.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. Residents are advised to stay safe and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
