Seville City Hall's event showcases rituals and cults in celebration of its 475th anniversary, according to The Carretería's presentation.
The Brotherhood of the Carretería, a historic institution deeply rooted in Seville's Arenal neighbourhood and port origin, recently commemorated its 475th anniversary. The celebrations, filled with solemn masses, guided tours, and educational conferences, highlighted the historical, social, and patrimonial importance of this venerable organisation.
The festivities began on September 8 with a solemn mass in honour of Our Lady of the Glorious Light, held at the brotherhood's chapel. This was followed by an extraordinary veneration of Our Lady of the Light on September 14, after the 11:00 AM mass, on the occasion of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
The origins of the Brotherhood of the Carretería can be traced back to 1550, when a cooper named Pedro Luis discovered an intense light and a small image of the Virgin in some sewers. The brotherhood, initially founded in the hospital of San Andrés, was established by the guild of coopers, closely related to the commerce of the Port of Indies and the New World, as emphasised by Manuel Aleés.
Over time, the Brotherhood of the Carretería acquired a penitential character and has celebrated its uninterrupted years of life without a break since 2025. Miguel Ángel Moreno, the brother mayor of the brotherhood, presented the acts and ceremonies of the anniversary.
A guided historical tour of the places where the brotherhood has resided throughout its nearly five centuries of history was led by Professor Alfonso Álvarez-Ossorio on October 25. The tour provided insights into the brotherhood's rich past and its significant role in Seville's history.
A cycle of formative conferences with the participation of prominent experts and historians took place on Saturdays 8, 15, and 29, following the 9:00 PM mass. The commemorative poster for the 475th anniversary, a work by artist Raúl Jiménez Toral, was also presented during these conferences.
The culmination of the celebrations was the Pontifical mass in the brotherhood's chapel, presided over by the Archbishop of Seville, Mons. José Ángel Saiz Meneses, on November 22. The official presentation of the acts, ceremonies, and commemorative poster of the 475th anniversary of the Brotherhood of the Carretería took place at the Colón Hall of the Seville City Council.
Despite not making an extraordinary procession, the celebrations were a testament to the enduring spirit and rich history of the Brotherhood of the Carretería, a beacon of Seville's past and a symbol of its resilience.
