Shark attack results in surfer's death in Sydney

Shark attacks, albeit uncommon, claim lives in Australia as well. A surfer in Sydney recently lost his life due to severe injuries sustained in an encounter. Investigators are scrutinizing the victim's surfboard to identify the type of shark responsible.

In a tragic incident, a 57-year-old surfer suffered a fatal shark attack off the coast of Sydney at Long Reef Beach in Dee Why on September 6, 2025. This marks the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 2022.

The victim, who lost both legs in the attack, could not be saved. The shark species responsible for the attack is yet to be definitively determined, but tiger sharks, bull sharks, and great white sharks—known to be common in the area—are the most likely suspects.

The attack occurred approximately 100 meters from the shore, according to police. Witnesses on the beach saw the shark pull the experienced surfer underwater. The incident has raised concerns about the increased presence of dangerous shark species around Sydney's beaches.

A study by James Cook University in Queensland found that predators like bull sharks spend about 15 more days off the Sydney coast in the summer than they did 15 years ago. This increase is attributed to rising sea temperatures, a result of climate change.

Climate change poses an increasing threat to swimmers and surfers due to the presence of dangerous shark species around Sydney's beaches. The Pacific is warming faster than most other marine regions in the world, contributing to this shift.

Following the incident, all beaches from Manly to Narrabeen in the north were temporarily closed. Helicopters and drones were deployed to search for the suspected shark. The surfer's surfboard, torn in two, is being examined to determine which type of shark was responsible.

It is important to note that the likelihood of being attacked by a shark in Sydney or elsewhere in Australia is very low. According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, there was only one fatal shark attack in the country last year. So far this year, there have been three shark attacks in Australia, not including the Saturday incident.

Long Reef is located about 20 kilometers from Sydney's city center on the Northern Beaches. Sydney, the most populous city in Australia, has a population of around 5.5 million. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and research to ensure the safety of beachgoers and aquatic enthusiasts.
