Sheriff from Tennessee potentially accused of killing his spouse, according to local authorities.

In the rural town of McNairy County, Tennessee, investigations are underway to re-examine the 1967 murder of Pauline Pusser, the wife of the famed Tennessee sheriff, Buford Pusser. Prosecutor Mark Davidson, who is leading the investigations, stated that the case is about giving dignity and closure to Pauline and her family, ensuring that the truth is not buried with time.

Buford Pusser, who gained national fame in the 1960s for publicly fighting organized crime, was at the center of a series of films and TV shows, most notably "Walking Tall" and its various sequels, spin-offs, and remakes. The 2004 remake of "Walking Tall" changed the lead character's name to Chris Vaughn, an unmarried Army Special Forces vet.

The TBI has re-investigated Pauline's body and found evidence suggesting she was killed outside her husband's car, contradicting Buford's statements to police. The autopsy found that Pauline was healing from a broken nose, "caused by interpersonal trauma," at the time of her death. The TBI's evidence also suggests that Buford's own gunshot wound had evidence of being a "close-contact wound," inconsistent with being from a drive-by.

This new evidence contradicts the long-standing belief that Pauline's death was an assassination attempt meant for Buford. Tennessee investigators have cast doubt on this aspect of the Pusser legend, suggesting that Pauline died due to an "act of intimate, deliberate violence." The TBI file reportedly quotes an expert acknowledging that Buford's shooting might have been staged.
