Shopping centers in Cebu aiming for trio of trendy experiences

In the heart of Cebu, the bustling metropolis is undergoing a significant transformation, with three major projects reshaping the way Cebuanos socialize and spend their leisure time. Ayala Center Cebu expansion, AyalaMalls Central Bloc, and Gatewalk in Mandaue are weaving lifestyle, leisure, and identity into physical spaces, creating a unique tapestry of experiences for the city's residents.

At the forefront of these changes are key entities such as SM Prime Holdings, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, and its residential arm SM Development Corporation (SMDC), along with Ayala Land, through its subsidiary Cebu Holdings Inc. These groups are recognised as major developers driving mall and residential projects in Cebu.

Ayala Center Cebu, a mall that has been a fixture since the 1990s, is undergoing a significant renovation and is nearly 80% complete. The expansion wing is set to be unveiled soon, promising a fresh and modern take on the beloved shopping destination. Ayala is investing P12.7 billion into these Cebu projects.

Meanwhile, AyalaMalls Central Bloc, located in Cebu IT Park, is attracting young professionals and the BPO workforce. This mall is transitioning from a traditional shopping centre to a hub for socializing, integrated into the work-life cycle of thousands.

Gatewalk in Mandaue, an upcoming entertainment-driven space, is envisioned as a "capital of fun". This project will feature food halls and creative hubs, offering a vibrant and dynamic environment for Cebuanos to enjoy. Although the exact opening date has yet to be announced, Gatewalk in Mandaue is expected to open in a few years.

Cebu has a history of reinventing its streets, neighborhoods, and landmarks to adapt to the changing needs of its people. If the early decades of mall culture were about air-conditioned relief and imported goods, this next chapter is about integrating into the work-life cycle and socializing. The larger story isn't just about investment figures or square meters of leasable space, but about how Cebuanos will adapt their routines around these evolving environments.

As these projects come to life, Cebu continues to evolve, offering its residents and visitors a dynamic and exciting urban experience.
