Germany to Conduct Nationwide Civil Defense Drill on September 11, 2025
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Germany will conduct a nationwide civil defense drill. This exercise is an annual event, typically occurring on the second Thursday in September, and involves federal, state, and local authorities testing their warning systems.
In the Allgäu region, several cities and municipalities will participate in this drill. The cities of Kempten, Kaufbeuren, and Memmingen are among those taking part. Additionally, sirens will sound in Allgäu at 11:00 AM, with cities such as Sonthofen, Durach, Oy-Mittelberg, Wiggensbach, Weitnau, and Lindenberg (in the Lindau District) participating.
Mobile sirens will also be used in Jengen, Roßhaupten, Buchloe, Güntzach, Obergünzburg, Pforzen (in the Ostallgäu District), and the market town of Markt Wald. Loudspeaker vehicles will be used in Weitnau.
The drill will be triggered by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance via the modular warning system (MoWaS). In Bavaria, radio and television broadcasts will also serve as warning channels, and digital information boards in city centers, municipalities, public transportation, and major railway stations will display warnings.
Citizens will also receive alerts on their phones through the Cell Broadcast service. To receive these messages, your phone or smartphone must be turned on and not in flight mode. It is recommended that you have an operating system update for Android version 11 or iOS version 16.1.
Older phone models may not be compatible with the Cell Broadcast service during the nationwide warning exercise. In such cases, citizens can download the Federal NINA warning app or the KATWARN app as alternatives.
During the drill, a one-minute rising tone will instruct the public to pay attention to radio broadcasts regarding serious threats to public safety. This will be followed by three equal, continuous tones (Dauerton) of 12 seconds each, with 12 seconds of silence between each tone, indicating an alarm for fire and other emergency situations.
An all-clear will follow at 11:45 AM via warning channels and smartphone apps. The all-clear signal is a one-minute continuous rising tone.
Cities and municipalities in Allgäu, such as Kirchhaslach, Turkheim, Wiedergeltingen, Amberg, Bohen, Hawangen, Ottobeuren, Legau, Bad Grönenbach, Winterrieden, Egg an der Günz, Lautrach, Niederrieden, Lauben, and the market towns of Lindenberg (Weiler-Simmerberg) in the Unterallgäu District, will also use sirens or issue warnings via loudspeakers during the drill.
The last statewide test alarm was held in March 2025 in Bavaria. The cities of Kempten, Kaufbeuren, and Memmingen are among those participating in the 2025 drill. While specific information about which cities and municipalities in the Allgäu region are participating in the 2025 test alarm exercise was not found, it is expected that more locations will join the drill as the date approaches.
Stay informed and prepared. For more information about the nationwide civil defense drill, visit the official websites of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance and your local authorities.
