Ascher Nursery: A Family Business Thriving in Oberasbach

The Ascher Nursery, a family-owned business deeply rooted in the heart of Oberasbach, has been a significant part of the community for over 50 years. Founded in 1965 by Alfred and Gertrud Ascher, the nursery has grown and evolved over the decades, adapting to the changing market environment.

Initially, the nursery started with just two greenhouses, but today, it spans over 3,000 square meters. This expansion has allowed the nursery to diversify its range, which includes cut flowers, bedding plants, and balcony plants. The nursery's focus on in-house breeding sets it apart, with a particular emphasis on African violets and Christmas stars.

The nursery's charitable efforts are noteworthy. For years, it has organised a charity flower dance evening in collaboration with local dance schools. In 2025, the nursery also participated in the Unterasbach church festival parade, a tradition it aims to continue in 2026.

To ensure poinsettias develop their characteristic colouration in time for the Advent season, the business simulates short days from around mid-September. This meticulous attention to detail is evident in all aspects of the nursery's operations, with computer-aided control systems regulating shading, heating, ventilation, and irrigation.

The nursery's workforce comprises ten dedicated individuals, including two apprentices. In 2015, Marina Ascher, the next generation, joined the business, ensuring its continuity for years to come. In recognition of its consistency and adaptability, the nursery was honoured by Oberasbach's First Mayor Birgit Huber.

The entrepreneurial roots of the nursery Ascher extend beyond the 60 years in the location, with previous gardening businesses in the family. This rich history is reflected in the nursery's commitment to quality and service.

Recently, the nursery expanded its service spectrum to include grave maintenance in Unterasbach and Lind. Dieter Ascher, a family member, explained that grave maintenance is about honouring the memory of deceased relatives and keeping their final resting place in a dignified and respectful state.

Michaela Heckel, the Economic Development Officer, described the nursery Ascher as a family business well-equipped for the future. With its deep roots in the community, diverse product range, and commitment to charitable causes, the Ascher Nursery continues to be a vital part of Oberasbach.
