Paul Foston, a renowned Golf Monthly Top 50 Coach and the author of "Improve Your Putting (Good Golf Guide)", has devised a speed control putting drill aimed at helping golfers avoid 3-putts and feel more confident on the course.
The adjustable drill is designed to cater to the varying green speeds of different golf courses. To perform the drill, set up a speed station on the putting green with two markers 15 inches apart. The drill doesn't require anyone to tell you how far to take the putter back or how hard to hit it, making it ideal for use before a round, as green speeds vary from course to course.
The drill serves as a good indicator of a golfer's ability to judge speed. If you finish your putt between the two markers, it indicates good speed. The closer you are to the second marker, the closer you are to perfect speed, which, according to golf expert Dave Pelz, is 15 inches past the hole.
Misses beyond six inches from the first marker or beyond the second one should be avoided. The first time attempting the drill, it may not be perfect, but with practice, improvement is noticeable.
