SkyBus Introduces Eastward and SunshineCoast Express Transportation Services
SkyBus, a globally renowned public transport service, is expanding its operations in Melbourne with the introduction of two new express services. The Eastern Express and Sunshine Express will commence services on August 31 and November 9, respectively.
The Eastern Express will provide daily services to Box Hill Central, Watsonia, Doncaster, and Melbourne Airport, while the Sunshine Express will travel between Sunshine Station and Melbourne Airport. Both services are part of SkyBus' new contract with the Victorian Government, which lasts until the end of 2034.
In a significant step towards sustainability, SkyBus is starting with an all-electric fleet for both the Eastern Express and Sunshine Express. The country's first electric double-decker buses are expected to arrive by mid-2027 as part of the electrification rollout. SkyBus aims to transition its entire Melbourne fleet to electric by 2031.
The expansion of SkyBus services will provide a convenient and affordable transport option for a larger number of passengers. The company, which carries almost 3 million people to and from the airport every year, has grown significantly since its humble beginnings as a single-bus airport shuttle service nearly 50 years ago.
The Eastern Express tickets are available from August 8, with initial one-way tickets costing 9.99 AUD and valid for three months from purchase. The Sunshine Express tickets will be announced closer to its launch date.
The key role SkyBus has come to play in Melbourne is being highlighted by this expansion. The services are expected to connect more Melbourne communities directly to the airport, further solidifying SkyBus' reputation as a world-class public transport service.
However, information about the leadership of the new electric SkyBus fleet in Melbourne is not yet available. The transition of the Eastern Express to electric will occur in 2026.
This expansion marks an exciting time for SkyBus and Melbourne's public transport system, as the company continues to serve more passengers while moving towards a more sustainable future.
