UK Startup Introduces Battery-Free Sleep Streaming Earbuds

In an exciting development for sleep-focused technology, the UK-based startup Somni has unveiled the world's first battery-free streaming earbuds designed specifically for sleep, named SomniBuds. These compact devices, a quarter the size of traditional Bluetooth sleepbuds, will be available for reservation on Kickstarter later this summer.

SomniBuds are powered by built-in rechargeable batteries and are wirelessly charged via near-field magnetic induction when placed on the SomniMat charging pad, which is designed to be placed under the pillow or mattress. The charging process occurs all night long, ensuring that the earbuds are always ready for use.

The SomniBuds, if successful, could be a new contender in the market for sleep-focused earbuds. Early backers will have the opportunity to reserve a spot for a $1 fee, securing a 33% discount when they become available. However, it's important to note that there is no guarantee that the SomniBuds will make it to market.

The exact technical details of how SomniBuds work are still scarce, but some initial promising results have been reported by Somni's friends at Shortlist, who have been testing the earbuds. The SomniBuds are 3mm thin and have a flat, unobtrusive design, making them comfortable for use in any sleeping position.

It's worth noting that all usual cautions apply for Kickstarter or crowdfunded projects. The charging-free claims of the SomniBuds are yet to be tested in real-world use, and there is some uncertainty about the reliability of the connection between the charging mat and the earbuds in various sleeping positions.

For those interested in reserving a spot, only 300 early backers will be allowed to sign up for the discount. The SomniBuds, along with the SomniMat, will be priced at $229 / £224 (around AU$465) without the discount, and $199 / £149 (about AU$310) with the 33% off deal. Early backers will also receive a bonus pair of earbuds.

In summary, Somni's invention of the battery-free streaming earbuds for sleep, the SomniBuds, promises to revolutionise the sleep-focused earbud market. With their compact size, wireless design, and innovative charging system, these earbuds could become a popular choice for those seeking high-quality sleep technology. However, as with all crowdfunded projects, potential buyers should approach with caution.
