Slovenia plans to introduce a new visa for remote workers, known as the digital nomad visa.

Slovenia is set to join Moldova and Croatia in offering a digital nomad visa program, opening its doors to non-EU remote workers seeking to live and work in Europe for up to a year. The program, set to launch in November 2021, provides a unique opportunity for remote workers employed by companies or clients outside Slovenia.

To be eligible, applicants must meet several requirements. They must demonstrate income equivalent to twice the country's average net monthly salary, currently approximately €3,200 per month. Applicants must also provide proof of accommodation for themselves and their family members, if accompanying.

Health insurance is another mandatory requirement. Successful applicants must provide coverage for themselves and their family members throughout their stay. Applications can be submitted online or through Slovenian embassies and consulates.

The program includes an unusual restriction: successful applicants must leave the country for at least six months before becoming eligible to reapply, preventing consecutive visa renewals. This cooling-off period distinguishes Slovenia's approach from other European digital nomad schemes that typically allow extensions or renewals.

Family members can accompany visa holders, but they are not allowed to work for Slovenian-based companies. The program reflects Slovenia's strategy to attract international talent while maintaining control over long-term immigration.

Slovenia offers relatively affordable living costs compared to Western European destinations, making it an attractive alternative for remote workers from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. The program also provides a full year of residency, unlike many digital nomad programs.

Detailed processing requirements for applications are expected to be finalised through Slovenian diplomatic missions worldwide. The exact processing requirements for applications have been published by the Slovenian government or relevant immigration authority.

Slovenia's digital nomad visa program is part of its efforts to attract international talent and boost its economy. With its scenic landscapes, rich culture, and strategic location in Central Europe, Slovenia presents an appealing destination for remote workers seeking a change of scenery.
