Small, traditional Sicilian towns thrive on peaceful tourism and native culture
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is experiencing a surge in village tourism. A 15% growth in village tourism is expected between 2022 and 2025, according to recent reports.
One of the towns leading this growth is Militello Val di Catania, located in southeast Sicily. In 2024, it was named "most beautiful village in Italy". The town has seen an increase in visitor numbers, particularly on spring weekends.
Militello Val di Catania is part of the Val di Noto, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. Overnight stays in B&Bs, inns, and private accommodations are also increasing in the Val di Noto.
Authenticity and visitor flow management that preserves historical substance and quality of life are in demand in Sicilian village tourism. The regional government in Sicily is promoting sustainable concepts, such as the "albergo diffuso" model, which distributes guest rooms and apartments throughout villages and integrates them into existing buildings.
The Borghi dei Tesori network, consisting of around 70 municipalities from all of Sicily's provinces, combines cultural tours, culinary offerings, and insights into local craftsmanship. This network attracts guests and encourages the return of young people to Sicily, some of whom work remotely and others who take over family businesses and bring new ideas.
Other towns, like Buccheri, previously without a main title, have gained recognition as culinary destinations and experienced a 20% growth last year. Montalbano Elicona, winner in 2015, records an annual increase of 5%, while Petralia Soprana had around 40,000 overnight stays in 2023.
Visitors to Sicily can try specialties like Bronte pistachios and olive oil from the Monti Iblei. Year-round growth is observed in village tourism in Sicily, with a 10% increase in overnight stays in the Val di Noto in 2024.

The growth in village tourism is expected to continue in Sicily, with a focus on preserving historical and local qualities. Tourism in many small communities in Sicily is transitioning from short-term holidays to a model that integrates culture, history, and everyday life. This shift promises a unique and authentic experience for tourists seeking to immerse themselves in the heart of Sicilian life.
