Customs Officers in Regensburg Seize Tobacco, Weapons, and Narcotics

In a series of recent checks, the Main Customs Office Regensburg has uncovered a significant amount of illicit goods, including cigarettes, shisha tobacco, stun guns, CS gas sprays, and small amounts of narcotics.

The checks, conducted on the A3 at Straubing-Bogen, led to the discovery of 95,460 untaxed cigarettes, primarily from Bulgaria. In one instance, a Bulgarian driver was found with 5,800 hidden cigarettes in his car. Two other cases saw the seizure of 8,000 and 6,900 cigarettes.

Thomas Schell, head of the control unit for traffic routes Furth im Wald, stated that smuggled goods are often found in technically complex hiding places, including vehicle panels. In one instance, a 44-year-old woman from Romania, traveling to Britain, was found with 800 cigarettes in her handbag and seven suitcases containing smuggled goods.

In a separate incident, a 48-year-old woman from Germany was found with 66 kilograms of unmarked shisha tobacco in two separate trips. The woman is currently under investigation for alleged tax evasion, but her name has not been disclosed in the available search results.

The Regensburg District Court sentenced the woman to eight months' imprisonment on probation for tax evasion and ordered her to bear the costs of the proceedings. The evaded tobacco tax amounted to 14,417.89 euros.

In addition to tobacco, the control unit also recorded cases involving weapons possession and drug offenses. Eight flick knives were secured by the officers, and small amounts of narcotics were discovered.

After paying a security deposit, the driver found with the hidden cigarettes was allowed to continue his journey. The total number of criminal proceedings initiated by the control unit in April was 47.
